Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

For BRFSS Participants:

Have you received a call from the Bureau for Public Health that goes something like this?

"Hi my name is Bob and I work for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health. We work in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and we are calling to do a health survey to ask you questions on health and health practices."

If so, it is a legal survey and not a SPAM call. This survey is voluntary and you don't have to answer any questions you do not want to.  WVBRFSS has operated on a federal grant since 1984.  These health questions help with modifying or creating programs designed to help the residents of West Virginia improve their health and well being.  All 50 states and territories conduct this survey and West Virginia data are combined with other states to produce national health data.

If you receive a call from 304-352-6542, please answer and help West Virginia state programs improve their services for residents.

Overview

Using data collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Statistical Services branch produces annual reports that include statistics on a range of risk factors affecting the health of West Virginia residents. The reports serve as a resource for stakeholders such as governments, schools, and community groups helping to improve the health of West Virginia.  The reports are accessible below.

Graphs displaying behavioral risk, tobacco, and injury statistics drawn from the BRFSS data and annual reports are available under Most Requested Statistics.

Survey Methodology

The BRFSS data are collected annually through a telephone survey (landline and cellphone). All 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and three U.S. territories conduct the survey in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey participants answer health-related questions including standard questions about chronic health conditions, risk behaviors, and use of services. States also have the option to include modules on special topics with particular health and/or policy relevance such as sun exposure, menu labeling, pre-diabetes, and consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. The CDC provides the questionnaires and modules for past surveys here.

More information on the BRFSS including detailed methodology, data user guides, publications, and other resources can be accessed through the CDC's BRFSS webpage
