On January 1, 2024, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) was officially reorganized into three separate departments in accordance with House Bill 2006. The legislation passed during the 2023 Legislative Session and was signed by then-Governor Jim Justice on March 6, 2023.
Senator Jim Justice, the former Governor, appointed Sherri A. Young, D.O., MBA, FAAFP, as Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health (DH) and Michael J. Caruso as Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities (DHF).
With the recent administration change, Governor Patrick Morrisey has appointed Alex J. Mayer as the new Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS).
Residents who receive DHHR services will experience no interruption due to this reorganization as a result of months of dedicated work by DHHR staff who carefully planned and prepared to minimize any disruption for West Virginians. All qualifying West Virginians will continue to receive the same benefits and services without any changes.
