Outside of Hospital.jpgWilliam R. Sharpe, Jr. (Sharpe) Hospital, located in Weston, West Virginia and operating under the direction of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, opened in 1994 and replaced the Weston State Hospital. It is a 200-bed acute care psychiatric facility with full accreditation from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Sharpe Hospital offers a wide range of services to patients either committed to the hospital through civil commitment or, in the case of forensic patients, ordered through the judicial system. The hospital works closely with the Community Behavioral Health Centers and other community organizations to ensure a smooth transition back to the community after discharge. The hospital has close, ongoing cooperation with West Virginia University, Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry, which provides professionals from different backgrounds (psychologists, clinical social workers, physician assistants, and psychiatrists) to the hospital. Over the years, Sharpe Hospital has emerged as a premier center for mental health education and research in West Virginia.

Sharpe Hospital takes seriously its responsibility for providing quality patient care and a safe environment for its patients and staff. Concerns about patient care or safety in the hospital that have not been addressed should be directed to the Chief Executive Officer at 304-269-1210, Extension 37002. If concerns cannot be resolved through the hospital, the Joint Commission's Office of Quality Monitoring should be contacted: 1-800-994-6610 or complaint@jointcommission.org.  You can also contact the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Office of Inspector General, Office of Health Facility and Certification: http://www.wvdhhr.org/ohflac/

Volunteer Opportunities
The need for volunteer services at William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital is based upon the recognition that patients in psychiatric facilities have fundamental human requirements, which include a sense of belonging and interpersonal relationships to help achieve a state of wellbeing. Volunteers make an important contribution toward fulfillment of these needs. The Volunteer Services Department is a vital link between the facility and the community. Volunteers help patients expand their sense of self-worth and self-esteem, providing a sense of normalization. Because volunteers make a valuable contribution to the quality of patient care, we strive to place individuals in positions best suited to their interests, abilities, and experience. Areas for volunteering include the Gift Shop, Patient Library, Recreation, and Special Patient Activities. Caring continues to be the most important service that volunteers perform.
