DHHR to Host Pop-up Farmers Market

9/28/2015

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) will host a pop-up farmers market on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, in Charleston’s Davis Park.  Participating farmers will accept cash, credit, checks and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards for participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

SNAP provides monthly benefits to help eligible families buy food, and the Department is encouraging greater consumption of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables by partnering with farmers markets and farmers across West Virginia.

“Through this partnership, we are working to increase awareness and promote incentives such as doubling benefits when the EBT card is used for SNAP purchases,” said DHHR Cabinet Secretary Karen L. Bowling. “These events are so important to families who might think they cannot eat fresh and affordably.  I encourage everyone in the area to come see what healthy food options are available.”

Vendors participating in the pop-up famers market include: The Bee Keepers' Berry Farm and Thankful Valley. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, mums and other products will be available for purchase.

The pop-up farmers market will be held at Davis Park, located on Capitol Street in downtown Charleston, on September 30, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

SNAP is administered by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources and governed by federal law and regulations of the US Department of Agriculture, Food Nutrition Services. This institution is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
