Effective​ July 16, 2022, 988 has been designated as the new three-digit number for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who are part of the existing* National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, provide support, and connect individuals to resources if necessary.

The 988 Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the U.S.A.
