A Bioecological Approach to Supporting the Spectrum of Motherhood in West Virginia

West Virginia is the birth state of Mother’s Day. Since 1914, states celebrate mothers during the month of May and highlight the joys of motherhood, yet the birthplace of Mother’s Day has a high infant mortality rate, which is an indication of overall health of a population. Leading causes of infant death include birth defects, prematurity, low birth weight, maternal complications, and sudden infant death syndrome. We must begin to consider the emotional impact of motherhood and the various layers of support needed to restore balance and advocate for this population. This session will call attention to the current maternal health needs within the State and collaborative ways to support mothers as they seek to grow their families.
