LGBTQ+ Counseling Skills and ConsiderationsParticipants will re-focus on concepts related to persons within the LGBTQ+ community with a reminder of *current language. The intention is to build practical skills and provider personal reflection skills to support interventions towards clients’ desired outcomes. This learning session is a 301 level for providers to explore diagnosis, identity development, interventions and practices. We will consider the intersections of Race, sexuality, gender, region, mental health diagnosis and physical health diagnosis as well as substances used. Stigma, and the relationship of stigma in treatment will be part of our session.
Objectives: Participants will be able to...
1. Recognize the relationship of Queer and Trans* history with psychology/counseling to misdiagnosis
2. Consider identity development and cultural representation in relation with identity development.
3. Name evidence-based, LGBTQ+ affirmative intervention strategies
