Sharon Lansdale of the Center for Community and Rural Health named West Virginia "Community Star" recipient: The Community Stars program, created by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH), honors individuals, coalitions, and organizations working in and serving rural communities and supporting rural health collaboration, communication, education, or innovation.  

Community Star designees represent the faces and grassroots initiatives that are working to address the social determinants of health and improve the lives of those who call rural their home.   Each year, NOSORH releases an electronic publication of state winners coinciding with the observance of National Rural Health Day.  Congratulations to Sharon! ​The West Virginia State Office of Rural Health (WV SORH), established in 1990, is a federal​-state partnership authorized by state legislation. The mission of the WV SORH is to implement programs and promote ​best practice models through collaboration with stakeholders, for the purpose of addressing rural health care.

Responsibilities

​In order to pursue our vision of equitable access to health care services and improved outcomes for our citizens, the WV SORH is charged with:

  • Designing and implementing a strategic plan aimed at addressing rural health needs
  • Managing federal rural health funds
  • Addressing declines in the health care delivery system
  • Addressing issues in physician recruitment and access to care
  • Coordinating with existing healthcare groups and agencies
