WV Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program

Volunteers

Each year hundreds of volunteers assist in outreach activities for the WVBCCSP, including Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month activities, and cancer walks. Volunteers help distribute WVBCCSP literature and talk with community members, family, and friends about the importance of early detection and the services available through the WVBCCSP. Volunteers have donated thousands of hours of service completing these activities. These and other activities have been diminished greatly by the pandemic.

We thank you for all your hard work to help women get screened for breast and cervical cancer. We want to make sure that we capture all the good work you are doing so we can tell the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about it. We need your help to do that! Document your efforts on the match form.

"We had Bonnie's Bus at the Gilmer County Health Department parking lot on October 25th & 26th. I had taken some pics of the staff at the Health Department along with the Bonnie's Bus staff. (Pictured left to right is Gilmer Health Department Staff Patty Thrasher- Threat Preparedness Coordinator, Brenda Smith - Nurse Administrator, Laura Self - Secretary & Certified Billing & Coding Specialist, Bonnie's Bus staff Kathy Humphries & Jerry Turner.)
Every year Patty Thrasher decorates the Gilmer Health Department lobby for Breast Cancer Awareness and she also does quilting in her spare time and she hangs one of her breast cancer quilts in the lobby as well. We get so many compliments on the decorations she does, I wanted to share them with you as well. The last picture is the outside of the Gilmer Health Department. We have so many that use this service that we needed more than 2 days. We are having Bonnie's Bus back again on November 17th this year since we have so many wanting to take advantage of getting their mammograms local. We saw 44 patients in the 2 days they were here. We are very proud to help the community & team with WVU Cancer Institute to offer the mammograms on Bonnie's Bus. I know it may be too late to submit but I still wanted to share our success with the program." - Laura Self
