​​​​​The WV Division of Primary Care coordinates the shortage designation process by submitting applications to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to designate geographic areas, populations, or health care facilities within West Virginia that are experiencing shortages of primary, dental, or mental health care providers, as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or Medically Underserved Areas or Populations (MUA/P). 

Shortage Area Types:
  • Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)​
    • ​Primary Care
    • Dental Health
    • Mental Health
  • Medically Under-served Areas/Populations (MUA/P)
    • A whole county
    • A group of neighboring counties
    • A group of county or civil divisions
