Bright Heart Health's Response During COVID-19

1/21/2021

Bright Heart Health (BHH) is an integrated healthcare system of telemedicine providers that connects patients to caregivers to treat a full spectrum of behavioral health disorders, including opioid use disorder (OUD). Telemedicine services provided through BHH offer a full complement of individualized tailored treatment programs to patients including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), comprehensive case management, and counseling. BHH was awarded The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for Behavioral Health Care Accreditation and is the first telemedicine Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Joint Commission Accredited program in the US. BHH admissions are available 24/7/365 and treatment can be accessed from anywhere with use of a smart device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop with audio and video capabilities.

Communities throughout West Virginia, particularly hard to reach populations such as inmates, pregnant women, and homeless, are being affected by the high rates of opioid-related deaths. These rates are continuing to increase with COVID-19 related stressors causing residents to relapse or use for the first time.

Telehealth is an effective way to provide buprenorphine MAT for OUD  patients and has been found to yield the same outcome measures, and in some cases superior outcome measures, in terms of diagnosis, access to care, clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction compared to in-person services. The BHH model can connect with local providers wherever there is a gap in patients’ continuum of care.

BHH is working to provide telehealth services to all counties in West Virginia, with particular emphasis on the counties that are most disproportionately affected by poor access to care. BHH is quickly establishing partnerships with local entities to utilize their services in the counties we are targeting. BHH is contracted with Unicare, Aetna, Highmark Blue Shield & The Health Plan in West Virginia and are working with hospitals and emergency departments across West Virginia in providing rapid access to MAT treatment. Some hospitals that are set up with BHH include Mon Health Medical Center and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. Additionally, BHH has growing relationships with parole offices in West Virginia to fill gaps in services to inmates released. BHH also provides treatment for maternal addiction when there is patient need.

All BHH patients are assigned a multi-disciplinary team of experts. Using evidence-based strategies, each member of their team collaborates on personalized patient care strategy. The care team continuously evaluates care progress and symptom management to identify areas that need attention. BHH’s mission is to provide expert care and support to all struggling individuals through telemedicine. BHH has dedicated programs for addiction, pain, mental health, and eating disorders regardless of location, schedule, or finances. Through the use of telemedicine, BHH aims to provide experts from the field to treat each individual fully and provide the support they need.

BHH is accepting referrals from all providers and is working with the HELP4WV Hotline.
