About the Commissioner

Ayne Amjad, MD, MPH
Commissioner and State Health Officer

West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources
Dr. Ayne Amjad serves as Commissioner for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health, and as the West Virginia State Health Officer.
Since 2010, Dr. Amjad has been a private practicing physician specializing in internal medicine and preventive health care and founder of Bee-Better, a non-profit organization against opioid addiction.
In addition to her broad experience at the local level, she is the Assistant Program Director of Encompass Health in Princeton, West Virginia, and the Medical Director of PCH Home Health in her hometown of Beckley, West Virginia.
Dr. Amjad earned her medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and completed her post-graduate training in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Additionally, she earned a Master of Public Health degree from West Virginia University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech.
Dr. Amjad is a member of the Human Rights Commission in Beckley, West Virginia, and serves as the Secretary of the West Virginia Board of Medicine.  She is also a Fellow of the Federation of State Medical Boards.  She is a former project coordinator of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s Beryllium Research Team and a former fellow of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A native of West Virginia, Dr. Amjad has served her home state for many years, from treating addiction to chronic health disease. She is a leader in transforming public health practice to advance health equity and create healthier communities for the betterment of West Virginia's citizens.
