Aging in Place: Supporting Senior Adults in Appalachia Through Community and Behavioral Health Engagement

Senior adults prefer to age independently in their homes as long as possible, and seniors living in rural areas have particularly strong ties to their homes, land, and surrounding community. Although there are benefits in doing so, many older adults experience individual and systemic challenges to aging in place that require support through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. In this training, we will discuss what senior adults describe as necessary for healthy aging in place Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to define aging in place and describe the psychological, physiological, and economic benefits of doing so for older adults living in rural areas. 1. Participants will be able to identify the individual and systemic challenges of aging in place, as described by older adults residing in rural areas. 2. Participants will be able to describe interventions that promote and support healthy aging in place for older adults and their caregivers from a more holistic context of health. This training is cosponsored by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Behavioral Health, Marshall University Social Work Department, Marshall University Psychology Department, Marshall University Counseling Program, and the Marshall University Center of Excellence for Recovery. 1.0 contact hours are available for WV Social Workers (WV Board of Social Work), Counselors (NBCC), and Peer Support Specialists/Recovery Coaches/Substance Use Treatment Professionals/Prevention Specialists (WVCBAPP).
