LGBTQ+ Counseling Humility 101

Participants will learn and review current* language and terminology specific to the LGBTQ+ community as well as recommended intake considerations. Our goals are two-fold, (1) increase provider comfortability working with people through demystifying community terminology and (2) increase clients’ comfortability working with providers through provider’s integration of inclusive language. We will briefly discuss intervention strategies (motivational interviewing, positive psychology, and cognitive-behavioral therapy) on a surface level to further support language changes and LGBTQ+ cultural humility. As we move through the training, we will be mindful of person-centered care through a trauma informed lens. Health disparities will also be discussed to support the needs for inclusive language. For persons who are just learning or just being introduced to the language, they may find this session intensive with vocabulary. Objectives: 1. Recognize and integrate current* LGBTQIA+ language to provide ethical and culturally humble service to community members. 2. Identify challenges and barriers in accessing MH treatment. 3. Name affirming and validating treatment options. *Language is an ever-evolving system This training is cosponsored by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Behavioral Health, Marshall University Social Work Department, Marshall University Psychology Department, Marshall University Counseling Program, and the Marshall University Center of Excellence for Recovery. 1.0 contact hours are available for WV Social Workers (WV Board of Social Work), Counselors (NBCC), and Peer Support Specialists/Recovery Coaches/Substance Use Treatment Professionals/Prevention Specialists (WVCBAPP). Psychology contact hours are pending approval.
