DHHR to Add 798 Slots to Aged and Disabled Waiver Program

1/11/2018

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Medical Services today announced the Title XIX (19) Waiver for Seniors, better known as the Aged and Disabled Waiver, will release 798 slots to accommodate those individuals on the wait list as of January 2, 2018.  Additional dollars for the program are attributed in part to an increased Federal match. The slots are expected to be released by the end of January 2018.

“The Aged and Disabled Waiver program is important to many residents and their families as it provides an alternative to long-term nursing home care and promotes independence, respect and community integration,” said Jeremiah Samples, Deputy Secretary of DHHR. “This program allows DHHR to continue serving one of West Virginia’s most vulnerable populations.  Governor Jim Justice has voiced his concern for families in West Virginia and fully supports this addition.”

Approximately 5,600 West Virginians receive critical services through the Aged and Disabled Waiver.  The program serves individuals over the age of 18 who want to receive care in their homes as opposed to going into an institutional setting, such as a nursing home.  Individuals must need help with activities of daily living to receive long-term direct care and support services under the program.  Those include bathing, grooming, dressing, eating/meal preparation, toileting, transferring and mobility.

Individuals must be determined both medically and financially eligible for Aged and Disabled Waiver services.
